Dancing at the Rascal Fair

$350.00

This is an extensive rework of an earlier piece (swipe) of the same name that I wasn't particularly happy with. I was down in my studio last night, avoiding the Oscars and puttering around with a small painting that wasn't cooperating. I had a little paint left over and for some reason the color made me think of this one, so I pulled it out and started dabbing some different color around, looking for some direction. The color was that orange on the lower part. As I blocked out more and more of the painting it became obvious to me that I had to paint over most of it, changing it almost completely, and I think for the better. The lighter color at the top is a tint of the orange. I don't like to have much flat color in these so I did a lot of wet on wet to to get some variation. You have to work fast to do wet on wet with acrylics, I waw really flying. I discovered a new (to me) brushwork technique, or at least I reminded myself to alter the direction and angle with each stroke.
I'm very happy with the results, I need some bigger paintings for my show in August and I didn't feel that I could show the original one, now I feel like it's one of my best and represents something of a breakthrough. The color pallete reminds me a bit of Carl Larsson the 19th Century Swedish painter with a completely different style, who I greatly admire.
Side note: Carl Larrson's paintings of his wife remind me of my wife Becky. Mostly just the giant eyes.
